The People of Samoa Need Us
Let’s face it, 2020 has been a dolt of a year for everyone. But whilst our hardships of losing businesses, losing jobs, facing changes and challenges, being locked inside our four safe walls – hurt, they really pale in comparison to the hardships those in under-developed countries face.
Let’s take Samoa, our island home, which we hold so incredibly close to our hearts.
Despite travel restrictions that continue to hinder the destinations ability to unite with beloved travellers, the owners and management team behind Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa in Samoa have bound together with widely successful grassroots NGO ‘Poutasi Development Trust’ and local storytellers to launch a campaign intent on supporting COVID struck villages; Sowful Journeys.
Extreme financial hardship at the hands of COVID-19 is quickly becoming Samoa’s new norm. This reality means that already present conditions of high malnutrition, rising non-communicable diseases, financial fragility and inadequate opportunities for better livelihoods, are worsening at an alarming rate.
With the launch of a crowd funding site and campaign, ‘Sowful Journeys’ seeks to change this trajectory by calling on people around the world, to pay a portion of their future holiday, and in return receive hospitality related credits and rewards, notwithstanding the pure joy of knowing that their contribution will directly fund a COVID recovery effort empowering Samoan families in need. With an initial goal of NZ$100,000,
With four main pillars centred around feeding families, raising villages, rejuvenating ecologies and a virtual tip jar, the Sowful Journeys movement is an impact model that stands to elevate an island nation whose service sector accounts for more than half of the GDP.
The hope of the Sowful team, is to not only build a viable means of continuing these efforts free of donations long into the future, but also to encourage new and similar ways of working together across Samoa and other smaller island territories for good.
