How to honeymoon in the Maldives...
My husband and I enjoyed the honeymoon of a lifetime in the Maldives, splitting our stay between Coco Bodu Hithi in the North Male Atoll and three nights at Soneva Fushi in the Baa Atoll.
Here are my quick roundups from each…
Coco Bodu Hithi
Get ready for every one of your senses to be heightened
Coco Bodu Hithi is tropical luxury set on the most pristine island. I swear, I’ve never seen water so blue, sand so white and palm-fringed coastlines so green. Everywhere you look you witness an abundance of beauty, with immaculately presented gardens, amazing house reefs to snorkel, your own private pool at the back of your villa and stunning beaches to sunbake and drink ice-cold champagne (complimentary of course, it’s your honeymoon, duh!).
You will want to book multi spa treatments, believe me
We all know that every massage you get is relieving and heavenly, let’s keep it real here, but when you’re on your h’moon the Coco Spa is perfection. There’s an extensive menu of restorative treatments inspired by ancient Indonesian, Thai and Indian techniques ensuring there’s something for everyone. We both opted for an hour massage and were treated in the same room of peacefulness listening to the water lap underneath the overwater villa as the calming nature takes over your mind and soul. Following your treatment, you can use the spa’s overwater plunge pool, sauna or steam room to leave yourselves literally floating back to your room.
Coco really is the best of both worlds
Do you like to be hidden away in your own private island villa, or do you want that once in a lifetime overwater experience? Coco has both options for you to indulge in, so you can try them both! We had a beautiful Island Villa, where we were tucked away among lush vegetation and felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. However, we still had the luxury of experiencing the overwater feeling at the Coco Spa & Stars Bar at sunset, which is the best spot on the island to witness the sun setting… with cocktail in hand!
You feel like you’re the only island in the Maldives
It is such a magical little island that you can walk around in less than 45 minutes, the blinding white sand is gorgeous the whole way around and all you can see on the horizon is more of the magical blue water. Male International Airport is only a 40 minute speedboat ride away, making paradise more accessible than ever.
You won’t go hungry, ever
For those late-night arrivals (like us), we stepped into our immaculate villa to find a cold bottle of celebratory champagne and a plate of sandwiches to feed our hungry stomachs after a day of travel. It’s the small touches like this that make you appreciate the thoughtfulness. The buffet breakfast at Air is worth an honorable mention, with dishes from around the world but my pick for dinner is Aqua, which boasts Thai and South East Asian flavours and a seasonal menu based around the day’s locally-caught seafood. It’s romantic, it’s modern and it’s exquisitely delicious. Hello fresh lobster, lobster mash andddd lobster mac and cheese – you can never have too much lobster, right?
Hello #villagoals #housegoals #honeymoongoals #everylifegoal
Soneva Fushi has got to be the epitome of every life goal that I’ve ever dreamed about. Our Villa was huuuuuuge and felt like it could sleep 10, but we were reassured it was just the two of us. With its chic whitewashed walls, raw and natural materials and intricate structures, it feels like the ultimate tree house. Perfectly tucked discretely in the lush vegetation, you feel like you’re in a world of your own, with many of the villas featuring sunken lounges, day beds, open-air bathrooms, and a private pool with net beds that are perfect for sunbaking.
The food is out of this world delicious, it’s highly advised to pack loose clothing, and keep doing laps on your bike to work it off
We tried every restaurant onsite and loved them all, but our favourite experience was Fresh in the Garden. This is their Mediterranean, Organic, Vegetarian and Vegan restaurant that lets you dine high above the gardens in the treetops, where the aromas of the herbs waft up from below. You can sit beneath the starry night sky and eat the most mouth-watering cuisine with herbs picked from the garden. And the suspension bridge walk to get there was another experience in itself!
Choosing one of their experiences is like trying to choose which type of cheese to indulge in from the cheese room
There is as little or as much to do as you wish at Soneva: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling, yoga, swimming, glassblowing, private sandbanks or gazing into outer space at The Observatory. Seriously though, if you must choose one main experience it has to be the sunset dolphin cruise. This was a pinch-me-moment for sure as our Ms Friday waved us from the dock and we were served the freshest canapes and coldest champagne, sailing along the glassy waters off into the slowing sunset. We spotted over 20 dolphins as they followed and played at the bow of our boat, our champagne flutes miraculously always full, and the soft beating sound of traditional Maldivian drums playing in the distance.
Spend the day, or the rest of your life at Out of the Blue
The structure, beauty and fluidity of Out of the Blue is enough to make you stand there and gasp in wonder at the sheer amazement of this structure. The two-storey overwater construction features five unique dining outlets and is home to their Michelin-starred ‘names’, as well as another complimentary ice cream and handmade-chocolate room. But the real deal here is the water slide, so jump on in and feel yourself shoot down into the lagoon below. As the only communal area at Fushi, at lunch time there is laughter in the air as adults and children alike take to the slide or snorkel around the gorgeous lagoon out the front. My secret tip make sure you order from the frozen margarita menu, yes there’s a whole menu dedicated to them and I took it upon myself to try them all, for work purposes of course. My favs – banana or mango!
Barefoot is required & the only mode of transport is a bike, I couldn’t be happier
I’ve come to the conclusion that Soneva is like my spirit island. When my Ms Friday looked at my shoes and then handed me a bag within two minutes of stepping onto the boat, I could only oblige to hand these over for the next few days. The feeling of riding around on bicycles, the souls of your feet touching the earth and access to an unlimited ice cream room is Willy Wonka for adults. You can lose all inhibitions and feel like you’re a child again and honestly, I didn’t feel bad about one bit of it. Whizzing around on bikes is incredibly beautiful, with the cool breeze and shade from the gardens you rarely get too hot, and if you do there’s always the 60 flavours of complimentary ice-cream for you to cool down with!
